Several of South Dakota's independent telephone companies formed what they called the South Dakota Network in 1989. The intent was to provide more long distance choice for rural customer by creating a hub for long distance services in Sioux Falls. Today SDN serves as the hub for long distance, the Internet and digital TV for 17 of South Dakota's independent telephone companies.
