History / Ownership

Innovation and determination. That describes SDN’s history.

SDN’s owners – the independent telephone companies of South Dakota – have a history of always looking for better ways to serve their rural customers with big-city services. SDN has strong roots on the prairie. South Dakota’s independent telephone companies started SDN more than 20 years ago and still own it.

The 17 owner companies (we call them Members) serve 80 percent of South Dakota’s geography. Nine of those companies’ general managers serve on SDN’s Board of Directors.

SDN is proud of its innovative efforts to keep communities connected.  Watch here as SDN's CEO, Mark Shlanta, describes how our staff reconnected our fiber across the Vermillion River.
